ARGENTINA

Argentina is the second largest country in South America (after Brazil) and eighth in the world. It is bordered by Paraguay and Bolivia in the north, Brazil and Uruguay in the northeast, and Chile in the west and south. Argentina is two hours ahead of US Eastern Standard Time during the Fall/Winter and one hour ahead of US Eastern Standard Time during Spring/Summer. Argentina is in the southern hemisphere meaning seasons are opposite to those in the USA. The country’s population and culture were heavily shaped from immigrants from throughout Europe, but most particularly from Italy and Spain.

The local currency was devalued in January 2002. A devalued currency paired with an advanced healthcare system makes Argentina an inexpensive and popular destination for affordable healthcare and travel. Buenos Aires, Argentina’s largest city, hosts modern hospitals with highly skilled doctors who have the latest techniques and technology available to them. Argentinian cosmetic surgeons are some of the best in the world due to their experience and expertise. Domestic demand for breast implants, laser surgery and wrinkle removal treatment is very high. One in 30 Argentinians is estimated to have had elective surgery making the population the third most operated on in the world after the US and Mexico. Buenos Aires recently hosted an international symposium on “21st-century plastic surgery” offering workshops including; third-generation ultrasonic liposuction and periorbital rejuvenation. Argentina, an exotic destination, boasts a number of natural wonders including; the Iguazu Falls, the Perito Moreno Glacier, the Andes mountains and the Peninsula Valdes.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, the ninth-largest city in the world, is a sprawling metropolis rising from the Río de la Plata and stretching more than 75 square mi (200 square km) to the surrounding pampas, the fertile Argentine plains. With more than one-third of the country's 39 million inhabitants living in or around Buenos Aires, the city is the political, economic, and cultural center of Argentina and the gateway to the rest of the country. As Argentina’s largest (port) city, it stretches south-to-north along the Rio de la Plata. The people of Buenos Aires possess an elaborate and rich cultural identity. They value their European heritage with lifestyles and architecture markedly more European than others in South America. Buenos Aires boasts bustling streets, grand avenues, old-time cafes and stylish restaurants. It's a vibrant cosmopolitan capital with cobbled streets, Paris-inspired boulevards, grand European architecture, nightlife and shopping. Buenos Aires is well known for its advanced healthcare system and highly skilled physicians. For all its diversity, the elusive spirit of Argentina, as a country, is present everywhere in Buenos Aires. The national dance, the tango, is perhaps the best expression of that spirit - practiced in dance halls, parks, open plazas, and ballrooms.

Cuisine

• There are over 6,000 restaurants, cafes and bars in Buenos Aires. The country's vast agricultural regions, ranches and fishing areas make Argentina a diner's delight, especially when sampling its grilled meats and quality wines. The country's European influence is reflected in its menus. Beef fanciers should learn the word parilla, often included on a restaurant's sign to indicate that barbecued steak is a specialty. Parrillada is a grilled specialty sampling every part of the cow including the udder. Cazuelas are meat, vegetables and, occasionally, fruit stews. Mate, an Argentine nouvelle cuisine, is a strong stimulating tea sipped from a distinctive seasoned gourd through a metal bombilla.
