Max Healthcare hospitals become the first in North India
to receive prestigious NABH accreditation Friday,
February 09, 2007 | Delhi
The recently established National Accreditation Board
for Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations (NABH) has
released the first set of standards. These cover all
functional areas of the hospitals and validate the
quality of care through compliance assessments against
500 criteria, critical to the efficient functioning of a
healthcare setting. There is a strong emphasis on
patient rights & benefits, safety, control & prevention
of infections in hospitals, practicing good patient care
protocols and better clinical outcome. The standards are
adaptable to a wide spectrum of healthcare services; are
in sync with local culture and systems, yet at the same
time, are benchmarked with the best International
standards. NABH is a constituent board of Quality
Council of India, set up with cooperation of Ministry of
Health and Family Welfare, Government of India and the
health industry, to establish and operate accreditation
program for healthcare organizations. The board is
structured to cater to the much desired needs of the
consumers and to set benchmarks for progress of health
industry. The board while being supported by all
stakeholders including industry, consumers, government,
has full functional autonomy in its operation.

HA Accreditation
The Hospital Accreditation (HA) program is a Thailand
specific accreditation awarded by The Institute of
Hospital Quality Improvement & Accreditation based in
Thailand.
The Thai accreditation process is demanding and only 14
hospitals in Bangkok (out of 100) have earned the HA
accreditation.
A hospital wide quality improvement program is required
for accreditation. The strategy used to achieve HA
accreditation is a step ladder strategy, including;

QCI is an autonomous body by the Government of India,
(Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Department of
Industrial Policy and Promotion being the nodal

bodies. QCI is also assigned the task of monitoring and
administering the National Board for Quality promotion
and oversee effective functioning of the National
Information and enquiry services. Indian Industry is
represented on QCI by three premier industry
associations ASSOCHAM, CII and FICCI.

accreditation standards by a healthcare organization,
demonstrated through an independent external peer
assessment of that organization's level of performance
in relation to the standards".

NABH standards for hospitals have been drafted by
Technical committee of NABH and contain a complete set
of standards for evaluation of hospitals for grant of
accreditation. The standards provide framework for
quality assurance and quality improvement for hospitals.
The standards focus on patient safety and quality of
care. The standards call for continuous monitoring of
sentinel events and comprehensive corrective action plan
leading to building of quality culture at all levels and
across all the functions. The standards are equally
applicable to hospitals and nursing homes in the
government as well as in the private sector.
